Part of Issue Two of Signal Hill, Cotton King is a sweeping, reported story about my grandfather, who ran the biggest cotton company in Egypt. The company, my grandfather, Egyptian cotton itself - all of it, growing up, made a web of lore and mystery. Reporting from Egypt, I sought to disentangle the stories I’d been told, that we were all telling each other, in order to find, hopefully, an image of the man who was my grandfather.
